The COVID-19 situation in Uganda has worsened significantly in the past month as the country faces a dramatic rise in COVID-19 cases and lack of access to vaccines.

It is estimated that only about 10 percent of the need for palliative care in Uganda is met, but specific data is lacking.

Stephen became a student in the Road to Hope (RTH) program in November of 2012 with the goal of becoming a clinical officer.

In September 2020, PCAU held a training on infection prevention control (IPC) and mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) for palliative care workers across Uganda.

Earlier this month, Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports made the long-awaited announcement regarding the opening of schools to complete the 2020 academic year.

The reopening of schools for candidate classes earlier this month was a busy, exciting time for the Palliative Care Association of Uganda (PCAU) team and many of our Road to Hope (RTH) children.

On September 20th, the President of Uganda lifted another phase of COVID-19 restrictions. Entebbe International airport and land borders are now open, and some schools will reopen for candidate classes on October 15th.

Schools remain closed with no signs that they will open this year. Some of the children on the Road to Hope (RTH) program, particularly the older ones, are taking this time to engage in other productive activities.
