PCAU 2023 Annual General Meeting

On May 26, the Palliative Care Association of Uganda (PCAU) hosted its 24th Annual General Meeting where its staff, board of directors and members met to review PCAU’s 2022 performance report and an overall update on palliative care development in Uganda.

The meeting is a special opportunity for members to gather as a unified body of supporters of palliative care in Uganda. Attendees were invited to network with one another, share their concerns, collaborate to address common challenges and provide vital insight into PCAU’s planning. In addition, many organizations and individuals were honored for their outstanding work in supporting PCAU’s mission to provide palliative care to all in Uganda.

Overall, this meeting provided an opportunity to reflect on the success of the organization’s programs over the last year. At the same time, attendees provided invaluable feedback on how programming can be improved and where to direct attention in the future. This year’s meeting connected colleagues from all levels of palliative care service in Uganda.

Over 100 people gathered at Fairway Hotel in Kampala, traveling from all over Uganda for the meeting. Attendees represented many differentprivate and public organizations providing palliative care services, and colleagues from around the world tuned into the meeting virtually. Three officials from the Ministry of Health – the Commissioner of Clinical Services, the Assistant Commissioner for Palliative Care and Hospice Services and the Assistant Commissioner for Oral Health – were also in attendance at the event. One of the special guests was the Honorable Moses Aleper, a member of the Ugandan Parliament representing Chekwii County constituency (Karamoja region), who also serves on the Committee of Finance, Planning and Economic Development in the parliament. All of these officials addressed the assembly and shared their gratitude for the service and dedication of all PCAU members and their vision for the growth of palliative care services in Uganda.
